3 reasons why you should let your child dress themselves for your next family session
There is nothing more fun and inspiring than a child that dressed themselves. I know, we have this idea in our head how family portraits should look like and I want to invite you to open this box for a moment and explore what possibilities are out there and why I think they are so valuable.
Reason no 1: You want to have a good time! I 100% belive that the experience of the photo shoot is just as important as the images itself. I mean, how much fun is it to look at photos that remind you of that dreadful day full of tantrums over outfits, smiles, bribes that didn’t work, annoyed partners, and so on… not saying that this will always be the case in a traditional family shoot. But from the many families I have portrayed there were many times where I could feel the underlying anxiety and I know there are so many ways of making this a fun and memorable time for everyone. So one big advise I have is, letting go of the idea we have about what we think we want to look at as a family. Instead love and embrace who you are as a family and trust the magic that will automatically happen when you surrender.
Reason no 2 : Remind yourself why you want a family portrait. Yes, for the memories. The memories of your children at the age they are in right now. Their quirky personalities, how obsessed they were about these pink glitter shoes or the t shirt that was 4 sizes too big. The spark in their eye every time they put their self made necklace on or the funny dance they did every time they listened to that one song. I understand you want those photos to be pretty and there is nothing wrong in getting dressed up for your shoot. But next time, let your child have a say, too. I promise you, these little things that makes your child who they are is what you want you really want to remember.
Reason no 3: Stand Out and own it! Yes, I mean it. I always want to know who the families really are that I work with. What they are into, what makes their heart beat, what makes them laugh and a bunch of favorite activities. Because if I know all of this, we can create a shoot so unique just like yourselves. We can go wild or soft or colourful or all of it at once. We can create artworks that truly resemble who you are as a family and take pictures you want to blow up big and frame because they make you feel the love you have for each other within this whole chaotic crazy family life.
